Can Heat Pumps Save Energy and Money?

Can Heat Pumps Reduce Energy Bills?

With a properly installed energy efficient heat pump system in your Las Vegas, Henderson or Boulder City home or business, you can expect to save up to 40 percent on power bills because the unit does not have to produce heat to keep your house warm. Instead, it extracts and collects heat from the outside air and circulates it throughout your home. In the summer, the same heat pump helps remove heat in from your home so you do not have to use the air conditioning as much, and when you do, the heat pump helps reduce the refrigerated cooling needed to keep your house comfortable.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Heat pumps typically have two sections, one unit indoors -- called an air handler -- and an outdoor unit that resembles a central air conditioner. The outdoor unit contains the compressor and the indoor unit handles the air flow and looks rather like a gas furnace. A liquid refrigerant loop circulates between the two, effectively absorbing and releasing heat as it travels through the system. The heart of the system is the compressor, so installing a good quality model with a warranty is a smart move.

Federal Energy Savings Tax Credits and Utility Company Rebates

If your heat pump system meets the criteria established by the International Code Council, you can apply for federal tax credits to deduct 30 percent of the cost of the unit, most with a limit of $1,500. Some credits can only be applied to existing homes that upgrade their appliances, not new construction. Local utility companies also offer incentives to help offset the initial cost and you should contact your local power company directly for advice on installing the right heat pump to meet their qualifications.

Energy Star, SEER, HSPF and AFUE Ratings

Please note that not all products with the Energy Star seal qualify for tax credit. To be sure your heat pump unit qualifies, check the posted ratings and compare them to the federal tax credit list which is online. The most important statistic to check is the HSPF rating, which refers to the efficient operation of the heat pump, and should be between 7.0 to 9.4 on the scale. The SEER rating -- which measures the seasonal energy ratio -- needs to be above 13.0. AFUE rates the efficiency of the gas heating elements and should range between 78 percent to 98 percent to qualify.

Extractor fans have often been an exception to the rule, with many fans being of a cheap and cheerful design, with a one speed operation and a simple on off switch. For better or for worse this is changing, and there are now a complete range of controllers that are coming into the electrical market. Some of these controls are excellent and generally their operational performance has not been a hinder either to the equipment or its operation. - 2 hours ago
